Instagram is home to billions of photos and videos, but it still does not offer a download button. Whether you want to save a cooking Reel, archive a travel photo, or keep a product Story before it disappears, you need a reliable tool that works without apps, without logins, and without watermarks.
That tool is iGram. In this guide — written from our first-hand experience building and maintaining the tool since 2024 — we walk through every feature, every content type, and every device so you can start downloading in minutes.
What Is iGram and How Does It Work?
iGram is a free, browser-based Instagram downloader. The workflow is simple: you paste a public Instagram link into the input field, tap the Download button, and the tool extracts the direct media URL from Instagram's servers. Your browser then downloads the file — an MP4 for video content, a JPG for images — directly to your device.
No server-side storage is involved. iGram processes the link in real time and discards it after the download is served. The tool runs entirely in your browser, which means nothing is installed on your device and your Instagram credentials are never requested.
iGram works on iPhones, Android phones, tablets, Chromebooks, Windows PCs, Macs, and Linux machines — any device with a modern web browser. For a side-by-side look at how iGram compares with other tools, see our 2026 downloader comparison.
Every Content Type You Can Download
iGram supports every public content format on Instagram. Here is a breakdown of each type, what file format you get, and any special notes.
Reels
Instagram Reels are short-form vertical videos up to 90 seconds long. They are the platform's fastest-growing content type and the most common download request. iGram saves Reels as MP4 files at the highest resolution Instagram serves — typically 1080×1920 pixels. We have a dedicated step-by-step tutorial if you want more detail: How to Download Instagram Reels for Free.
Video Posts
Standard video posts (including what was formerly IGTV) are also saved as MP4 files. iGram handles videos of any length that Instagram makes available through its public interface. For a deeper look at video quality, formats, and troubleshooting, see our Instagram video downloader guide.
Photos
Single-image posts are downloaded as JPG files at Instagram's maximum served resolution — typically 1080 pixels on the longest side. Unlike a screenshot, this method preserves the original quality without adding compression artefacts or UI elements. Read more in our HD photo download guide.
Carousel Posts
Carousel posts contain multiple slides — photos, videos, or a mix. When you paste a carousel link into iGram, it detects all slides and offers each one as a separate download. You get every image and video in the set, not just the first slide.
Stories
Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours. iGram's Story Saver fetches all active Stories from a public profile so you can download them before they expire. Video Stories save as MP4, image Stories as JPG. For a complete walkthrough, read How to Save Instagram Stories.
Highlights
Highlights are Stories that a user has permanently pinned to their profile. Unlike regular Stories, they do not expire, so you can download them at any time. The process is the same as downloading Stories.
Profile Pictures
Instagram displays profile photos as small circles, but the original image is much larger. iGram can extract and download any user's profile picture in its full HD resolution.
Step-by-Step: How to Download with iGram
The process is the same regardless of content type. Here are the three steps:
- Copy the Instagram link. Open the Instagram app or website. Navigate to the Reel, post, photo, or Story you want. Tap the three-dot menu (⋯) and choose "Copy link". On the desktop website, you can also copy the URL directly from your browser's address bar.
- Paste the link into iGram. Go to igramtools.com. Tap the input field and paste the URL. Click the Download button. iGram processes the link — this usually takes two to five seconds.
- Save the file. A download button (or multiple buttons for carousels) appears. Tap it and the file saves directly to your device — MP4 for videos, JPG for photos. No pop-ups, no redirects, no extra steps.
Device-Specific Instructions
iPhone (iOS 13+)
Safari on iOS 13 and later supports direct file downloads. After you tap Download on iGram, the file goes to your Files app in the Downloads folder. To move a video to your Camera Roll: open Files, locate the MP4, tap the Share icon (square with an up arrow), and choose "Save Video". For photos, choose "Save Image". You can also use the Documents by Readdle app for more convenient file management.
Android
Chrome on Android handles downloads natively. Tap the download link and the file saves to your Downloads folder. Videos and images appear in your Gallery or Google Photos automatically. If Chrome displays a file dialog, tap "Download" to confirm.
Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)
On a computer, the MP4 or JPG file downloads to your browser's default Downloads folder. You can right-click the download button and choose "Save link as…" to pick a specific save location. This works identically in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.
Quality and File Formats
iGram downloads files at the highest quality Instagram makes available. It does not compress, re-encode, or alter the file in any way. Here is what to expect:
- Videos and Reels: MP4 format, typically 720p or 1080p depending on the original upload quality.
- Photos: JPG format, up to 1080 pixels wide (1080×1350 portrait, 1080×1080 square, 1080×566 landscape).
- Stories: MP4 for video Stories, JPG for image Stories, at the resolution Instagram serves.
If a file appears lower quality than expected, the original creator likely uploaded it at a lower resolution. iGram cannot enhance resolution beyond what Instagram provides — no tool can.
Safety and Privacy
As the team behind iGram, we take safety seriously. Here is what our tool does and does not do:
- No login required. iGram never asks for your Instagram username or password. There is no account to create.
- No file storage. We do not save the files you download. Links are processed in real time and discarded.
- No software install. iGram runs in your browser. Nothing is installed on your device.
- HTTPS encryption. All connections to iGram are encrypted.
- No watermarks. Downloaded files are identical to the originals — no logo, no overlay, no branding added.
For full details, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
Legal Considerations
Downloading publicly available content for personal, offline use is widely practised and generally accepted. However, it is important to respect intellectual property:
- Downloaded content belongs to its original creator.
- Do not re-upload or republish content and claim it as your own.
- Do not use downloaded media for commercial purposes without the creator's permission.
- Credit the original creator when sharing downloaded content on other platforms.
- Comply with copyright laws in your jurisdiction and with Instagram's Terms of Use.
iGram is a tool — how you use the downloaded content is your responsibility. We encourage ethical, respectful use.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
The download does not start
Ensure you copied the full Instagram URL — it should start with https://www.instagram.com/. Shortened links, links from third-party apps, or edited URLs may not work. Try clearing your browser cache and reloading iGram.
The content is from a private account
iGram can only access content from public Instagram profiles. If the account is set to private, the content is not accessible through any third-party tool. Ask the account owner to share the media directly.
Carousel slides are missing
Make sure you copied the link to the specific carousel post, not a link to the profile. The URL format should be https://www.instagram.com/p/ABC123/.
Story Saver shows no Stories
The profile may not have any active Stories at the moment (Stories expire after 24 hours). Check that the account is public and has a coloured ring around the profile picture, indicating active Stories.
File does not play
Instagram videos are saved as standard MP4 files. If your device cannot play them, install VLC Media Player (free, available on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android). For JPG images, any image viewer will work.
Tips for the Best Experience
- Bookmark iGram. Add igramtools.com to your home screen or browser bookmarks for instant access.
- Use a stable connection. Large video files download faster on Wi-Fi than on mobile data.
- Download Stories early. Stories disappear after 24 hours — do not wait until the last minute.
- Check the content type tabs. iGram's homepage has tabs for Video, Photo, DP, Story, Reels, and Highlights to help you find the right tool quickly.
- Try different browsers. If one browser has issues, switch to another (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge all work).
Why We Built iGram
We built iGram because we needed a download tool that actually worked — fast, no ads covering the page, no fake download buttons, no required app installs. Most existing tools were either unreliable, cluttered with pop-ups, or secretly asked for Instagram credentials (a major red flag).
iGram is maintained by a small team that actively monitors Instagram's platform changes and updates the tool when Instagram modifies its API or content delivery. That is why iGram continues to work reliably while many other tools break and go offline.
