Instagram Stories are designed to be temporary. A user posts a photo or video, it lives on their profile for 24 hours, and then it is gone. Instagram does not provide any way to download someone else's Story. You can take a screenshot, but that loses video content, captures UI elements, and the poster may be notified.
If you want to save an Instagram Story — a recipe, a travel clip, an event announcement, a product demo, a behind-the-scenes peek — you need to act before the 24-hour clock runs out. And you need a tool that actually works.
iGram's Story Saver does exactly that. In this guide, written from our experience building and maintaining the tool, we cover how to download Instagram Stories step by step, on every device, with the practical details that other guides leave out. If you are new to iGram, start with our complete iGram guide.
Why Download Instagram Stories?
Stories are Instagram's most ephemeral content format. Here are the most common reasons people save them:
- Time-sensitive content. A brand announces a flash sale. A friend shares concert tickets. A restaurant posts today's menu. Once the Story expires, the information is gone — unless you saved it.
- Reference and research. Social media managers, marketers, and designers save competitor Stories for analysis, inspiration, and strategy planning.
- Personal memories. Friends and family post vacation moments, milestones, and casual updates that never make it to their permanent grid. Downloading preserves the memory.
- Tutorials and recipes. Many creators post step-by-step instructions, cooking recipes, or workout routines exclusively as Stories. Saving them lets you follow along offline, at your own pace.
- Archiving. Creators sometimes delete their accounts or go private. Saving important Stories ensures you keep the content.
How to Download Instagram Stories with iGram
iGram's Story Saver works differently from its post downloader. Instead of a post URL, you provide a profile URL (the username), and iGram fetches all active Stories for that public account.
- Get the profile URL. Go to the Instagram profile whose Stories you want to save. Copy the profile URL — it looks like
https://www.instagram.com/username/. You can also just note the username. - Open iGram Story Saver. Go to iGram Story Saver and paste the profile URL or enter the username in the input field.
- Browse and download. iGram displays all active Stories for that profile — both photos and videos, with thumbnails. Tap the download button next to each Story you want to save. Video Stories download as MP4, image Stories as JPG.
Stories vs. Highlights: What Is the Difference?
Understanding the difference is important for knowing when you need to act fast:
Stories
- Appear at the top of the Instagram feed as circles with a coloured ring.
- Expire after 24 hours. Once expired, they are permanently removed from Instagram.
- Can contain photos, videos (up to 60 seconds per segment), text, polls, quizzes, and stickers.
- Must be downloaded before they expire — there is no way to recover an expired Story.
Highlights
- Appear as circles below the bio on a profile page.
- Do not expire. They are permanently pinned by the user.
- Are collections of past Stories the user chose to preserve.
- Can be downloaded at any time — there is no urgency.
iGram supports both. The process is the same — enter the profile URL and iGram shows what is available.
Device-Specific Instructions
Saving Stories on iPhone
After tapping Download, the Story file (MP4 or JPG) saves to the Files app in the Downloads folder.
- For video Stories: Open Files → Downloads, find the MP4, tap it to preview. Tap the Share icon (square with an up arrow) and choose "Save Video" to move it to your Camera Roll.
- For image Stories: Same process, but choose "Save Image" instead.
On iOS 16+, you can also long-press the download link in Safari and choose "Download Linked File" for faster saving.
Saving Stories on Android
Android handles this more seamlessly:
- Tap the download link — Chrome saves the file to your Downloads folder.
- Videos and images appear automatically in your Gallery or Google Photos.
- No extra steps needed — the file is ready to view, share, or edit immediately.
Saving Stories on Desktop
On a computer, Story files download like any other file. MP4s and JPGs save to your browser's default Downloads folder. Right-click to choose a custom save location.
What Can and Cannot Be Downloaded
What works
- Photo Stories from public accounts.
- Video Stories from public accounts.
- Highlights from public accounts (including all segments within a Highlight).
- Multiple Stories in one session — download as many as you want.
What does not work
- Private accounts. If the profile is set to private, Stories are not accessible through any third-party tool.
- Expired Stories. Once a Story's 24-hour window has passed, it is removed from Instagram's servers and cannot be recovered.
- Interactive elements. Polls, quizzes, question stickers, and link stickers are rendered as part of the image/video — you get the visual result, not the interactive function.
- Close Friends Stories. These are restricted Stories visible only to selected followers. They are treated as private content.
Quality and File Formats
iGram downloads Stories at the quality Instagram provides:
- Video Stories: MP4 format, typically 720p or 1080p resolution, up to 15 seconds per segment (users can post multiple segments for longer content).
- Image Stories: JPG format at Instagram's served resolution, typically 1080×1920 pixels.
- No watermarks, logos, or branding are added by iGram.
- Audio is included in video Stories.
Safety, Privacy, and Anonymity
One of the most common questions about Story Savers is: "Will the person know I viewed or downloaded their Story?"
With iGram: No. iGram does not log into your Instagram account and does not interact with Instagram as "you". The Story owner's view count and viewer list are not affected by iGram's download. Your anonymity is preserved.
Additional safety details:
- iGram never asks for your Instagram password.
- No software is installed on your device.
- Downloaded files are not stored on iGram's servers.
- All connections use HTTPS encryption.
For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
Ethical Guidelines
Stories are personal content. While downloading from public accounts is technically possible, we recommend responsible use:
- Respect the creator's intent — Stories are often meant to be temporary.
- Do not re-upload someone else's Story and claim it as your own.
- Do not use downloaded Stories for harassment, doxxing, or any harmful purpose.
- Credit the original creator if you share their content elsewhere.
- Comply with copyright laws and Instagram's Terms of Service.
Troubleshooting
No Stories appear for a profile
The account may not have any active Stories right now. Check if the profile has a coloured ring around their picture in Instagram — that indicates active Stories. Also confirm the account is public.
The Story Saver is not loading
Clear your browser cache, try a different browser, or check your internet connection. If the issue persists, Instagram may have temporarily rate-limited requests — wait a few minutes and try again.
Downloaded Story is blurry
iGram delivers the quality Instagram provides. If the creator posted a low-quality image or video, the download will match. Some image Stories with lots of text overlays may appear lower quality due to Instagram's compression.
I want to download a Story that already expired
Unfortunately, this is not possible. Once a Story expires (after 24 hours), it is removed from Instagram's servers. The only exception is if the creator saved it as a Highlight — then you can download it anytime.
Pro Tips
- Set a reminder. If you know a specific account posts important Stories, set a daily reminder to check and download before the 24-hour expiry.
- Download Highlights as a backup. Even if you miss a Story, it may appear in the user's Highlights later.
- Organize your downloads. Create folders on your device for different accounts or topics to keep saved Stories organized.
- Use iGram for other content too. The same tool handles Reels, videos, photos, carousels, and profile pictures.
